Whole Wheat Soda Bread
Ingredients
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1⁄2 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons cold butter
- 2 cups whole wheat flour
- 1⁄2 cup old-fashioned oats
- 11⁄2 cups buttermilk
Cooking Instructions:
- Preheat the oven to 375°F. Grease a baking sheet.
- Combine the all- purpose flour, brown sugar, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl; mix well.
- Cut in the butter using a pastry cutter or two knives.
- Stir in the whole wheat flour and oats.
- Make a well in the center of the mixture and pour in the buttermilk all at once. Mix with a fork until well blended.
- Turn the dough onto a floured board and knead for 1 minute.
- Shape into a ball and set on the baking sheet. Press into a 6- inch circle. Cut a cross in the top.
- Bake for 40 minutes, or until well browned and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
